Featured Designers of Show Off Event 2009

The adjective ultra has been with Bates for almost as long as he can remember: “if you ask my mom, she’ll tell you I used to run around the house as a kid and yell ULTRA ULTRA ULTRA” insists Bates. The word has always had a profound hold on him and for years he has adopted it as both a personal moniker and ethos for life.
It boils down to living in the now; for the moment and aggressively pursuing your passions in life. Common as an expressive term in Europe; along the lines of extra or super, the word has been mistreated in North America; winding up on household products, such as: ultra-whitening toothpaste or ultra-soft toilet paper. Nevertheless, when Bates determined to launch his clothing line he knew it had to be ULTRA. “It is my favourite word in the English language, or any language for that matter. It is a single word that completely epitomizes my energy for and feeling about life” maintains Bates. This energy is reflected in his avant-garde designs, resulting in pieces that are bold, modern and dynamic.

F as in Frank is a neo-nostalgic vintage and new clothing store, for girls and guys. The majority of our clothing, accessories and footwear are inspired by certain fashion trends of the 80's and 90's. This includes vintage hip-hop and rock tee's, jackets, dresses, sportswear, retro ski-wear, vintage leather boots and jackets plus loads more. A vintage junkies dream. We specialize in dead stock gear, "new/old" goods that were made in the 80's and have been hiding like treasure for 20 + years. Often, we have over 100 styles of 80's sunglasses. Last but not least, our home label- "SNAP". Drew and Jesse Heifetz own F as in Frank and design this collection: where they take recycled materials from vintage clothing and re-work them into various fashionable and more wearable styles.

Freshly emerging out of the heart of Vancouver, Mental Wealth uses its Design to promote more then a brand but rather a lifestyle and culture. A product of the west coast environment, Mental Wealth represents the diverse communities that inhabit its home town. Promoting a positive state of mind an a progressive way of life, Mental Wealth is for that individual who's thought it not restricted and inside the box.

Tito Deville Band

Tito Deville Band will be playing at SHOW OFF April 17, 2009

BIO: The Bastard love child of Tito Jackson and Mink Deville, Tito Deville was born in a recording stable in a Hot Town where he was immediately swaddled in Michael Jackson’s red leather “Thriller” jacket. Traveling from afar, three wise men – Andre 3000, Kid Rock and Rick James – visited the infant bearing gifts of moves, grooves and a wicked Jheri curl. Raised by wolves in a burnt out Panzer Tank in the ruins of Dresden, Tito changed his name to Dieter and earned small change by re-enacting the fairground scenes from Carol Reed’s “Third Man”. Discovering music as a saving grace after a near fatal accident back in 2000, he began entertaining crowds whilst saving his pennies and surviving on a diet of Rebellion, the artist formerly known as Tito bought a truck-load of used iPods from a Russian soldier in Gdansk and loaded them with early versions of “Tonight” and “Hot Town”. Fired from the Panzer’s gun under the cover of darkness, the iPods shattered into thousands of white nano butterflies which fluttered down onto the pillows of sleeping DJs, Radio Shows, Celebrities, Fans, Magazine Editors and other people with ears, infecting them with the spirit of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Lovin’ Spoonful. Denying everything that went before, Deville’s unique flair was last seen travelling the worldwide stage while living in the NOW ‘cos it’s all about Tonight!

The Roundhouse in Yaletown...

Long admired for its functional industrial beauty, the Roundhouse has major historical significance to the City of Vancouver both from an architectural and a social perspective. It is Vancouver’s oldest heritage building still on its original site.

Originally constructed in 1888, the Roundhouse was comprised of a cluster of buildings used to house and service the great steam locomotives of the day. Today the glass pavilion on the north side of the building continues to serve Canada’s rail history as the home to Engine 374 – the first passenger train to enter Vancouver in 1887.

Due to the vision and hard work of many, this beautiful wood post-and-beam structure with its heritage brick walls was renovated after Expo 86 to become a Community Arts and Recreation Centre. As a public facility jointly operated by the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation and the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Society, the Roundhouse Community Centre (RHCC) is here for all to enjoy. Besides making our spaces available for rent, we offer a huge array of arts, cultural, and recreational programs. It is very likely that while your group is enjoying your event, just down the way others are actively involved in dance, wood-working, pottery, basketball, or some other exciting activity. The versatility and beauty of the RHCC welcomes thousands of users through its doors every year.

Family Services of Greater Vancouver

At some point in life, everyone gets stuck. Since 1928, people experiencing challenges have been turning to Family Services of Greater Vancouver—a community-based not-for-profit organization providing crucial social services to children, youth, adults, and families across British Columbia's lower mainland. They offer support, provide hope, and present opportunities—helping people realize and create possibilities for themselves. And we do this through a combination of professional counselling, therapy, education, advocacy, planning, and other supportive services. All of our work is about building healthy, vibrant tomorrows.

Their services range from prevention to intervention. We provide: abuse prevention & trauma treatment; addictions treatment; adoption services; community education & development; counselling; employee assistance; employment services; immigrant services; intensive family & parenting services; support for youth with special needs; victim support; and youth services for homeless youth and youth living in at-risk situations.
